Hicks - That were in North Carolina at various times

Information from Dan Hicks

Richard Hix/Hicks was in the War of 1812 and died in 1815 at the Battle of New Orleans (in Camp). Zilphia (Brake) Hicks (daughter of Jacob Brake) received a land pension in 1817 (50 acres by Ill Will Creek Kentucky). I have no birth or marriage dates or locations. Looks like Richard's family was around VA, NC, & Kentucky. Problem is there are similar names but dates that are just too scetchy far apart to make a good match. Mostly from N.C.

Children of Richard & Zilphia Hicks M: around 1800 Edgecomb County N.C.

WILLIAM2 HICKS, b. Abt. 1792, South Carolina.

SALLY HICKS.

William Hicks is my line of genealogy.

Thank you very much for any help you could get me. I would really appreciate it.

Greetings, I am researching my Hicks family who came down from Va., to Winston Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina.

The father of my aunt Eliza Victoria HICKS was John T. Hicks. A guess of his birth in Va., is about 1875-80, His wife was Neely C.Neal Hicks. This information is at Findagrave.

There is a possibility that John and his wife first came to Wilkes County, which is near Forsyth County, nc.

The first finding I have is on the 1930 census and he is living in Forsyth County with two children, Laura and Sherman. I found Sherman's memorial on Find a grave and it states that he was born in Carroll County, Va.on Nov. 6, 1901. Later I found that Sherman was killed in Winston Salem at the age of 24 years by accidentally falling from an electric power pole. He had married  Mildred Agnes HEPLER. They had at least one child, Ruth Ellen Hicks, born 7 Jan. 1924 and died 6 July. 2000.Ruth remarried to JD Ashburn later.

I have found nothing concerning the birth of John T Hicks or his wife NEELY. I have found very little of Laura Hicks.

Eliza Victoria Hicks, married my uncle James Franklin Myers. I found that Eliza gave birth to two sons, Thurman and Woodrow before they were married. These two sons appeared on the 1930 census with their mother's maiden name, HICKS.

'Jim" Myers and his family was from Wilkes County, here in NC.

I would appreciate any help you can give me and will be happy to share what I have garnered on mostly the history of Eliza.

Sincerely,

Tom Cheek

Walnut Cove, NC

Am seeking William Hicks b. 1796, North Carolina., married possibly 1825, and died after 1850. He married Eliza who was born 1805, North Carolina, and d. after 1860. William and Eliza both thought to have died in Blount Co, Tenn. The oddity is that William was deaf, and produced children who were deaf. Only 2 were hearing, the first 4 were born in NC, and the rest in Tenn.

William and Eliza's 2 hearing children were (1)Nancy, who married John (Jack) Brown, and was raised by the James family, not the Hicks. I believe she was raised by the James, who were an allied family, because she was a hearing person, in a deaf home. She was one of the younger children of the family. (2) James D. Hicks, who married Sarah E. Wright.

James was born June 9, 1833, Tenn, and d. June 17, 1908, Blount Co, Tenn. He married Sarah Oct 313, 1854. They produced William Isaac Hicks Oct 3, 1870, Blount Co, Tenn, who married Mary Maude Lebow, July 16, 1889, Blount Co, Tenn. William is my husband's grandfather.

** NEW INFORMATION FOUND** From Mary Hicks  Feb. 13, 2001

I have got some exciting news! I have learned more about my husband's Hicks. I never thought I would with the deaf gene, but I have.

William Hicks married Elizabeth DUNNAWAY 1825, Caswell Co, NC. They had several children in NC, and then migrated to Tenn. I believe they were in Monroe Co first, and then in Blount Co, in the 1850 census.  Elizabeth had a sister Nancy Aneway Dunnaway who married Elijah H. PASS  1820, Person Co, and migrated to Tenn also. Nancy's daugther Rosa H.(Rose) Pass married her cousin, son of William and Elizabeth Hicks.

His name was Lans Hicks, but their marriage license 1853, Blount Co, gives his name as Lancin. I have been looking right at them all these years and haven't been able to see them.

To complicate life even more, Lans and Rosa had a son William Russell Hicks, who married his cousin Mary Ellen Pass, in Morgan Co, Tenn. in 1884. She was the daughter of Russell Ramsey Pass and Margary Matilda Taylor. Would you know of any other previous Hicks researchers who have Pass or Dunnaway/ Dunaway marriages in their family tree?
