I need help. Archibald O. Hicks was born somewhere in Va in 1782, He married Ruth or Rutha Blanton born circa 1778. They left Virginia and settled at Short Mountain Tennessee. This is at various and asundry times in Cannon or DeKalb Co. depending on who reported it. They had 9 children of whom I am aware. they are Nash born 1802, Rebecca born 1804, Hooper born 1806, Hannah born 1808, Archibald Walter Overton Hicks born 1817(noted lawyer and jurist in Texas and died in Louisana after the Civil War in which he served), William born 1816, Ruth born 1819, Janie Rose born 1818 and Elizabeth or Betty born 1820. Elizabeth is my great great grandmother as she married Robert M. Jones, their daugher Hannah Josephine married Jacob Freeman, their son Fer Jones Freeman married Mary Rebekah Bryant, their daughter Reba married Freddie Oliver Littlejohn and I am their daughter Karen Marguerite Littlejohn and I married Peter Robert Gilmartin.
I do believe that the John Hicks who died from head injuries falling from a horse may have been Archibald O.'s brother. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Query from Joan Troy
Charles P.HICKS was the son of George F. HICKS (b. 1852) and Alice Grubb HICKS. Alice R. Grubb was born Dec. 12, 1858, daughter of Marion GRUBB and Sarah McREYNOLDS. She and George F. Hicks married and had several children, among whom was Charles Paul Hicks (and possibly Daniel Hull Hicks). George Hicks seems to have prospered as merchant in Sweetwater, since his wife was able to pass on various lucrative properties to their children when she died (I am told this, but haven't seen the will myself).
I've always been interested in knowing what happened to Charles Paul Hicks after his marriage to Alva McGhee Howard. Alva was the daughter of John McGhee and his wife Sarah Adaline Harrison.
In 1893, Alva eloped (age 14) with Tom Howard, who lived just up the river. Her family was displeased. A feud broke out in 1898 and Tom's brothers and a cousin were killed by Alva's father and brother. She testified and they were convicted. She recanted her testimony and a new trial was granted. Meanwhile, Tom had run off to Knoxville with Alva's sister Lawson. I think that between Tom's running off and the new trial, Alva was at loose ends. Maybe she felt she couldn't go home to her father's house and turned to Charles HICKS as the answer to this problem. They married sometime in September but the marriage was not recorded until Nov. 28. They divorced June 5, 1902, a few months after Tom Howard was killed as a result of the feud.
Family lore has it that when Charles Hicks' family found out he had married Alva, they were horrified (presumably because of the feud) and whisked him away. I have no idea about that -- you know how family lore can be. It just seems to me that she married HICKS out of expediency and that once a new trial was granted and she was able to make things right with her father and brother, she no longer needed a haven with HICKS.
Bottom line is that I want to know whatever happened to Charles and whether there is any form of information surviving that might provide insight into his marriage and then his divorce from Alva, whether he remarried (I think so) what he did with his life (I think he may have been a travelling salesman) and when he died.
Alice Grubb HICKS' will, I am told, indicates that Charles Paul Hicks had children from a union previous to or following his marriage with Alva (which was childless), because his children were bequeathed $400 each, but Charles himself is not named to receive anything. I figure he either predeceased his mother or she cut him out. The will was executed in 1920. Alice G. HICKS died November 11, 1929 and was buried in Westview Cemetery in Monroe County.
So this was rather a long story and I thank you for reading through it!
Do you have any information about this line?
Many thanks,
Joan Troy

Uvette Hicks Brice - ubbie@hctc.net
My name is Uvette HICKS Brice. My GG Grandfather was Alfred HICKS. He was born in Bradley County Arkansas in 1837. He married Amanda Elizabeth DAVIS in 1858 in Bradley County. They moved to Texas in 1873 from AR. They moved with his mother, Nancy CROFT Hicks and her mother, Anna WAGNOR Davis. Also her brother William Davis and his wife Elizabeth HICKMAN Davis. And nieces Mary and Nancy Lindsey who were married to brothers, Tom and Frank HICKMAN. I am researching for any information on Alfred's father. He is listed only as Mr. Hicks. Nancy CROFT (Craft) Hicks is listed to be from South Carolina. She had several children born in Tennessee all counties are unknown. No where is her husband listed except as Mr. Hicks. Alfred had several sisters and one brother that is known about. The brother was Dudley Hicks and is listed on the 1850 census for Bradley County as being 28 yr.. of age. Alfred at the time is listed as 7. Alfred's sister, Louisa (Louise) Hicks married Ansil Crisp and they remained in AR. when the family moved. They had 2 sons for sure, Daniel Boone Crisp and Veston Crisp. Apparently, Alfred had to leave AR. because he killed his best friend thinking the best friend to be an Indian. I can not seem to get any more information than that. Thank you, Uvette
