These children were all born in the vicinity of Parma, New York. Their
father , Samuel, came to western New York with his father Samuel. The
first Samuel Hicks was a Pathmaster and his name is on the first tax list,
dated Oct. 6, 1800 for the large town of Northampton , N.Y.He located on
Lot 7, of range 2 Parma. He was a famed hunter and trapper and kept the settlers
supplied with fresh meat. He is said to have traverse the entire Genesee
Co. as early as 1791, hunting game and furs. He hunted and trapped
on the lake Ontario shore near Braddocks Bay at a place known for many
years as Hicks'Point. His daughter Clorinda, married John Atchinson
in 1805. The Atchinsons claimed credit for the first apples in the
area, but descendants of Samuel Hicks claim that the oldest orchard was planted
on Samuel's homestead. In 1809 the first Baptist church of Parma was
organized near the Hicks settlement and among the first members were Amos
Hicks, Samuel Hicks, and Esther Hicks(This material can be found in History

"Comments other that the birth records is from other sources"
My father, John Hicks was born of German descent, was a tailor by trade,
served seven years as an apprentice. Lived in Middletown, Vermont.
He was a small active man, energetic, black hair and good looking.
Generous to friend and foe. His capital was his trade. Much
of his time was spent in travelling from house to house cutting garments.
Fine work he would take home to make up. My mother was a beautiful
woman, medium size, deep blue eyes and bright red hair. She had
a heart full of sympathy and good will for every son and daughter of
humanity. She loved too well to live under the influence of orthodoxy,
and father and mother both embraced universalism at an early period.
The first move of the family was from Ruthland County Vermont to Onandageo
County, New York about the year 1816. The country was new and many
hardships prevailed and much sickness encountered, added to the scarcity
of the necessities of life.
Next moved was to Ohio about 1818. At Olean Point our folks obtained
a boat which became the ark for all our families and their increases. In
a few days we reached the smoky little town of Pittsburgh but passing on
we made our next landing at Marietta Ohio, remaining there about a year.
Our next move was again by water down the Ohio River to Troy, since called
Patriot, in Switzerland County Indiana. Here our little ark rested
and its inmates went forth to help build a mighty West.

I just received from a total stranger a Bible that is all about the Hicks family. I went into Family Search and they have it a Hix but the bible says Hicks. It starts out with Candice Hicks Cleveland b Dec. 6, 1798 and died Feb. 28, 1869. She married Simon Cleavland born Oct. 28, 1795 and died June 10th, 1830. It is 6 pages of handwritten information on the Hicks and Cleveland family. I also have the 3 volume set of "CLEVELAND FAMILY 1899" I looked up Candice Hicks and in the Cleveland book it says Candace- Bible says Candice Book says maiden name Hicks or Hill. The Bible says Hicks. I believe that the Bible belonged to Candice Hicks Cleveland. If interested in rest of information email me. I will gladly share. Joyce
JoyceGS55@aol.com
The Bible is 6 1/2 "x10" and 2 1/4 " thick. The edges are gold color and Bible is kind of between a burgurny/brown color. The front and back are very detailed as both have Victorian stylle design. On the end it says Holy Bible in gold letters. The first and second pages have nothing on them. The next page says A Token of Reguard from Mrs. G.A.Harny To. Mrs. Conanl. The (l) on the last word could be( t) but not crossed. The first page printed says:
THE HOLY BIBLE
containing
THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL TONGUES, AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED.
PHILADELPHIA: J. B. LIPPINCOTT & CO. 1867.
I saw it in the " Cleveland Family Chronicles" December 4, 2006 issue. But I've since seen it on the websites in several places. He took a lot of time trying to GIVE it to the correct person. He sent it from PA. I just got it 2 weeks ago and really haven't had much time to work with it. Maybe as I'm copying for you I might find what I'm looking for. In the center of the Bible 5 complete pages full and a little on 6th page of handwritten information. It also had in it some pieces cut out of a newspaper. I will copy those first.

This is the end of the information in the Bible. If you have any question feel free to just email me any time. I also have the three volume set hard cover of "Cleveland Family 1899." I also have the hard cover book on "History of Shiawasee and Clinton Counties Michigan 1880". I hope that this helps somebody out there. If you put it online be sure and tell that the Bible clears up one question. In the Cleveland Books on page 925 volume #1 Family #2456. SIMON CLEVELAND born Western, N.Y., June 1831, a.36 m. Candace Hicks or Hills. The Bible clears up the last name (and notice the spelling of both first and last name are different between the book and the Bible) of Candice Hicks. Therefore proving that it is Hicks and NOT Hill. The book has her first name spelled Candace and Bible says Candice. ALSO ALL THROUGH THE BIBLE IT IS (CLEAVLAND) AND BOOK IS CLEVELAND.
But they are the same family. If you find or suspect any errors in my copying let me know and I will double check.

Hope that your Holidays were GREAT. I was just proofing the information from the Bible and I found a couple of errors. #1 I sent you all of it but I skipped what was to be #4 and sent it to you as #5. But you do have it all. Sorry I didn't want you to put errors that I made out online. Joyce Shaw If anybody has any addition questions it's OK if you want to give my email address.
